Ayant été réparateur d'appareils électro-ménagers (dans une autre vie...), j'ai eu l'occasion d'obtenir, gratuitement, il y a environ 32 ans de cela, une unité de réfrigération avec évaporateur par gravité. L'unité était encore fonctionnelle après environ 40 ans de loyaux service. Elle faisait partie d'un réfrigérateur avec présentoir vitré que le boucher utilisait pour présenter ses produits de viande (Merci Jean-Guy Poudrier, RIP...).
J'ai installé une chambre froide sous l'escalier avec 2 pouces d'isolant en polyuréthane et j'y ai installé cette unité de réfrigération. Il a fallu que je coupe l'évaporateur en 2 et le rabouter pour faire un "U" afin que cela puisse convenir à l'espace utilisé. Le compresseur original a fait environ 7-8 ans (avec R12 comme réfrigérant) et je l'ai remplacé par un compresseur avec du réfrigérant R22. Celui-ci a fait environ 25 ans et a rendu l'âme. Je l'ai donc changé récemment (juillet 2024) de même que la valve d'expansion, car j'utilise maintenant du réfrigérant R134A.
Tout fonctionne très bien et la température se tient aux environ de 3 degrés Celsius.

Being a retired appiance repairman (in another life...), I had the chance to get, for free, roughly 32 years ago, a refrigeration unit with a gravity evaporator. The unit was still functional with roughly 40 years of loyal service. It was part of a refrigerator with a glass display that the butcher was using to show his meat products. (Thank you Jean-Guy Poudrier, RIP...).
I installed a cold room under the stairs with 2 inches of polyurethane insulation and I installed this refrigeration unit in it. I had to cut the evaporator unit in two pieces and put them together to make a "U" to fit my space. The original compressor ran for 7-8 years (with R12 as refrigerant) and I replaced it with a compressor with R22 refrigerant. This one made approximately 25 years and died. I change it recently (July 2024), together with the expansion valve, because I am now using R134A refrigerant.
Everything is functional and the temperature stays around 38 degres Fahrenheit.
